Dr. Michael R Jones

Mike is one of the nation’s top experts in putting pretrial research and law into everyday practice and in alleviating jail crowding. For over a dozen years, he has helped hundreds of localities and states implement new practices that achieve more community safety, court appearance, fairness, and efficient use of public resources.

Mike is the President and Founder of Pinnacle Justice Consulting, where he and his associates:

(1) provide training and technical assistance to states, localities, and various stakeholder organizations to understand and implement legal and research-based criminal justice policies and practices;

(2) assist states and local jurisdictions in designing and implementing strategic, system-improvement initiatives;

(3) perform empirical research, data analysis, and system and program evaluation; and

(4) provide expert testimony in bail litigation cases.

Mike specializes in pretrial justice and alleviating jail crowding.

  • He has been a key partner in the national Advancing Pretrial Policy and Research (APPR) initiative since its inception in 2018.

  • He has been consulting for the U.S. Department of Justice’s National Institute of Corrections since 2004.

  • He worked at the non-profit Pretrial Justice Institute (PJI) for nearly seven years, where he served as the Director of Implementation,.

  • He worked in Jefferson County, Colorado, for nine years, where he served as the Criminal Justice Planning Manager.

  • Mike received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
